Animal Immunization and Sterilization Services (ASIS) is affiliated with a number of avian and exotic pet organizations and we regularly attend continuing education courses to stay up-to-date on exotic pet medicine. We provide our clients and their pets excellent diagnostic services and state-of-the-art treatments.

Annual Examinations

Since most exotic pets are able to hide signs of illness as a result of their status as prey out in the wild, the team at Animal Immunization and Sterilization Services (ASIS) strongly recommends annual physical examinations for each pet. These exams are used to check for health conditions and abnormalities, as well as nutritional needs and weight changes. Often, by the time a physical change is obvious to the owner, the health condition of the pet has already advanced. Birds, in particular, have a very high metabolic rate so they can drop substantial amounts of weight quickly. Our annual physical examinations help us to identify problems before they've advanced too far.

Avian and Exotic Exams

Have you recently added an exotic or avian pet to your household? We recommend scheduling a post-purchase examination as quickly as possible so that we can begin determining a baseline of health for your pet. This initial exam includes:

  • Complete physical

  • Husbandry and nutritional consultation

  • Disease screening

  • Laboratory testing, as needed

  • Small mammals spay and neuter

  • Avian Blood Sexing: Unlike mammals, it is usually impossible to identify a bird's gender visually, with the exception of a few bird breeds which are sexually dimorphic. We are, however, capable of performing advanced DNA sexing for gender identification. This test is performed using as little as a single drop of blood. This sample can be easily and safely obtained from a vein causing minimal stress for the bird. A genetic picture is produced, analyzing the bird's sex. The results are available in 3-4 weeks and the results are extremely accurate. Like human DNA, bird DNA is unique and this test can be performed on birds of all ages.
